Musical Theater
Character dance is an important part of classical ballet training. It consists of barre and center just like a ballet class. Based on folk and traditional dances, character dances can be found in many classical ballets - Swan Lake has the Spanish and Hungarian Czardas dances, Coppelia has a Mazurka dance, Nutcracker has Russian dance. Character dance helps young dancers with coordination and musicality and gives them an expressive upper body.
Character dress code
Girls - Black skirt (hitting just below knee), black 1 1/2" heeled-shoes
Boys - Black character or jazz shoes
Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical, acrobatics and classical ballet. It’s a fluid, free-style way of moving.
Contemporary dress code
Girls - Black leotard, bare feet or half-sole shoes
Boys - Black tights, black character or bare feet or half-sole shoes
Musical Theater classes are an opportunity for students to put on a show! Classes are run as rehearsals from audition to fully-staged shows at the Long Island Children’s Museum Theater in the first week of April 2022. Students sing, dance and act while learning stage craft, choreography and characterization.
